In December of 2006, while staying in the Arizona home of our dear friends, I began to read a pamphlet that they had on soaking prayer. It was a step-by-step guide to soaking in God's presence, and I was amazed at what I read. The whole soaking prayer experience that was described in the pamphlet that I held in my hand was something that the Spirit of God had taught me years ago in the secret of my prayer closet, and it was an experience with God that, until reading this pamphlet, I thought was unique to me and my relationship with my Jesus.
At that moment, a faith was birthed in my heart that the Lord was giving me yet one more key stepping stone in bringing others into a deeper more intimate relationship with Jesus - the relationship with Him that they were always meant to have. He was leading us to open our own soaking prayer center in our home. The goal: to bring others into a life-changing encounter with the Living God; no preaching, no program, just meeting with God and soaking in His presence.
What is soaking prayer?
For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,
"In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and in trust shall be your strength."
But you were unwilling (Is. 30:15 ESV).
Soaking prayer is the opposite of striving. It is returning to and resting in God. It is quietness and trust, rather than activity and anxiety. For me it is summed up in the words that the Lord once spoke to a friend of mine. The Lord told him, "Stop praying so much, and just be with Me." That's the heart of the Father and the principle behind soaking prayer: just being with Him.
In his book on The Pursuit of God, A.W. Tozer gave us these wonderful words:
In this hour of all-but-universal darkness one cheering gleam appears: within the fold of conservative Christianity there are to be found increasing numbers of persons whose religious lives are marked by a growing hunger after God Himself. They are eager for spiritual realities and will not be put off with words, nor will they be content with correct "interpretations" of truth. They are athirst for God, and they will not be satisfied till they have drunk deep at the Fountain of Living Water.
If your soul is athirst for God, then ask Him if He wants you to commit to this. God moves in response to obedience. If you come just to "check it out", then I wouldn't necessarily expect you to meet God here. However, If you come with an intense thirst for God, in obedience to His command to come, then He has promised us that He will open for you a fountain of living water: "For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert" (Is. 35:6b).
